Nanyang Technological University's smart food waste treatment equipment has arrived in Hong Kong, creating a new model for urban low-carbon transformation!
Located within the Hongyi Environmental Education Base in Sheung Shui, New Territories, Hong Kong, this is the first strategic pilot project of a collaboration between Hangzhou Nanda Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. and the Hongyi Environmental Education Development Foundation. The project processes an average of 200kg of food waste daily. Using a dual-driven "technology + education" model, it is helping Hong Kong establish a "community-based closed-loop Waste Management system" and providing a practical model for urban low-carbon transformation.
Project Features: From Technological Innovation to Urban Aesthetics
1. Localized design: purple-gray body leads the environmental protection fashion
In response to Hong Kong's compact urban space and high level of community engagement, Nan Da Environmental Protection customized and developed a smart food waste treatment device. Embellished with Hong Kong's signature purple Food Waste Recycling color scheme, the device features a modular design and a smart touch interface. Occupying a mere 3 square meters, it seamlessly integrates into communities, schools, and other settings. Its quiet operation makes it a prime example of "invisible" environmental infrastructure.
2. Technological breakthrough: room temperature degradation connected to one-click fertilizer production
The project utilizes Nanda Environmental's independently developed, room-temperature aerobic biohydrolysis process, which requires no external heating. After 8-24 hours, The Food Waste is degraded to a reduction rate of over 90%, with a residue rate of less than 10%. A "one-touch fertilizer generator" is also included, converting wastewater into a nutrient solution that meets the standards of the Hong Kong Organic Resource Center for liquid fertilizer. This nutrient solution can be used directly for community landscaping or distributed by residents, achieving "in-building recycling."
3. Carbon reduction effectiveness: data embellishes green ledgers
It is estimated that a single device can process 73 tons of kitchen waste annually, which can significantly reduce carbon emissions from secondary garbage transportation. The liquid fertilizer produced can replace chemical fertilizers, which can achieve additional carbon reduction and is equivalent to planting hundreds of green trees.

Social Value: From Environmental Education to Community Empowerment
As the core carrier of the "Kitchen Waste Recycling Pilot Program" of the Hony Environmental Education Development Fund, the project deeply integrates educational functions:
Interactive Tours
A touchscreen digital screen and transparent cabin showcase the waste degradation process in real time, making the process of "turning waste into treasure" tangible.
Citizen Workshops
Regular "Kitchen Waste to Green Plants" workshops are held, where residents can bring their own fruit peels and vegetable leaves to experience on-site fertilizer production in exchange for green plants.
"This is not only a processing device, but also a 'green hub' that triggers behavioral changes." said the head of the Hongyi Environmental Education Development Fund.

International layout: from Hong Kong to the global urban ecology
"This project validates the feasibility of a 'high-density urban community disposal solution,'" said the project leader at Nanda Environmental Protection. Food waste isn't the end of food, but the starting point of a circular economy. Going forward, Nanda Environmental Protection will continue to deepen its "technical standardization + scenario customization" strategy, working with global partners to build a low-carbon urban ecosystem and help every city unlock its self-healing potential.
